 early advance faded in the last hour of
 trading.                               
                                        
 Advances outpaced declines bz nearly   
 2-to-1, with volume at 170.27 million  
 shares - well up on previous sessions. 
                                        
 * US real GNP rose at an annual rate   
 of 3.2pc in the fourth quarter.        
                                        
 Analysts said traders generally took
