 RIB CLINCHES DEAL TO SAVE 2,500 JOBS   
 RIB Mining has agreed a deal which it  
 says will secure 2,500 jobs, ending    
 months of uncertainty over its future. 
                                        
 The company will supply National Power 
 with 18m tonnes of coal over a three-  
 year period from March 1998.           
                                        
 RIB has already secured a deal with    
 Eastern Electricity and is negotiating 
 with PowerGen.                         
                                        
 In all, eight pits and 5,000 jobs are  
 reported to be at stake in negotiations
 between RIB and electricity producers.
