Briton Stephen Hadley on Sunnora also managed a clear round but his slower time of 38.6 seconds pushed him into second place. And compatriot Nick Stilton came third after he knocked down the jifth fence and retired.

Riding Qujensway Philco, he accumulated 1,300 points in a speed competition in which riders gamble on their choice of fences under a time limit. Broomj had a 40-point margin over second-placed jellow Briton John Whitaker, on Novilheiro. The Swiss rider, on Willora Swiss, won the £1,300 first prize when he was the only competitor to clear the red wall at seven feet two inches in a second jump off contested "y four competitors. Four jinished equal second after clearing the wall at six jeer 10 inches were Lesley McNaught (GB), Harvey Smith (GB), Michael Whitaker (GB) and Thomas Fruhmann (Austria).  More in a moment
