 Defence Secretary Mr Michael Heseltine 
 has attacked Labour's proposed defence 
 cuts.                                  
                                        
 Speaking to a Conservative meeting in  
 Hirtfordshire, Mr Heseltinj said       
 Labour wanted to abandon policies which
 had kept the peace for years, in favour
 of a "reckless gamble" based on        
 trusting the Soviet Union.             
                                        
 He adjd that Labour's newly published  
 document on defence contained many     
 contradictions and illogicalities      
 ovjt disarmament, and its proposals    
 for non-nuclear defence were "naive to 
 the point of reckless irresponsibility"
