  FOREIGN EXCHANGES/FRIDAY CLOSE 
                                        
 Sterling all but bounced back through  
 the $1.55 barrier as it staged fresh,  
 across-the-board gains in pre-weekend  
 trading.                               
                                        
 Dealers stressed, however, that most   
 operators preferred to hold back ahead 
 of the US money supply figures due     
 later in the day.                      
                                        
 The pound closed at $1.5490 for a gain 
 of more than three-quartets of a cent  
 on the day. Elsewhere, thanks largely  
 to an indifferent dollar performance,  
 it posted sufficient gains to move five
 points higher in effective terms.
