 He said the pit strike was no longru   
 just a case of protecthng jobs - it was
 a defence of the national intetjut.    
                                        
 But violence distracted attention from 
 the central issues of the diupzte 1nd  
 obscured the justice and validit= of   
 the miners' case, he added.
