    NO 18-HOLE PLAY OFF FOR OPEN   
                                        
 There will be no more 18-hole play-offs
 to settle an Open Championship in the  
 event of a tie.                        
                                        
 The Royal and Ancient have announced   
 that for next year's event at Sandwich 
 a play-off will take place immediately 
 over five selected holes.              
                                        
 In the event of a furthjt tie, the same
 holes will be used for a "sudden drpth"
 play-off.                              
                                        
 The R and A Championship Committee     
 canvassed the views of leading plazjrs 
 before deciding on the change.
