 The stock market was not encouraged    
 bz better than expected US December    
 trade figures.                         
                                        
 Prices rallied for a short time when   
 the $12.2 billion deficit was announced
 but this gain was soon lost as         
 investors continued to back off in thin
 trading condidtions.                   
                                        
 Wall Street on the other hand welcomed 
 the figure and registered a sharp rise 
 in the Dow Jones index                 
                                        
 Leading equities were little changed   
 on balance during the day's trading.

 Rumours of French buying gave a boost  
 to Eurotunnel who rose 21p at 269p.    
                                        
 $ate and Lyle stayed supported bz      
 Hillsdown stake and were up 4p at 794p.
 Birmid lost 7p at 366p as they await   
 the outcome of the BCI bid.            
                                        
 Among newspapers United News added 11p 
 at 421p following recent US expansion. 
                                        
 * Gilts have halved earlier quarter
