 Thousands of people braved the cold to 
 watch the multi-coloured opening       
 ceremony in McMahon Stadium.           
                                        
 Two teams were timetabled to begin the 
 first ice hockey contest even befor    
 the end of the two-hour extravaganza.  
                                        
 Czechoslovakia were due to meet W st   
 Germany in their Pool B round-robin    
 clash at 9.30pm (GMT), with Norway     
 against Soviet Union at 11.30pm        
 followed bz Austria v US at 1.30am.    
                                        
 They are the only competitive ev nus of
