The twice world champion was in commanding form, allowing the young Austrian to close to within 10 seconds before coolly pulling away - and stopping inches after the chequered flag after running out of fuel. Senna, fastest in practice, lost his pole spot after gear selector problems with his McLarin-Honda on the grid. He stalled, the start was aborted and hj re-joined at the back in his spare car. The 28-year-old Brazilian thrilled his home crowd bz powering past car after car and at third-distance he was second But it was all in vain. He was black- flagged and forced to retire on lap 29 when officials decided he should not have changed cars after the start.
P361 CEEFAX 361 Sun 3 Apr 20:25/25   3/5   BRAZILIAN GRAND PRJX Britain's Derek Warwick delighted the hard-working Arrows-Megatron team bz clinching a well-deserved fourth place, his best ever result in Rio de Janeiro. Warwick looked set to lose one place when defending world champion Nelson Piques approached in his Lotus-Honda - but responded in style. Piques shot past both Warwick and the Benetton-Ford of Thierry Boutsen in one manoeuvre but, as he did, Warwick tucked in behind to retain fourth spot. Nigel Mansell was comfortably third in the Williams-Judd when mechanical trouble forced him to retire.
P361 CEEFAX 361 Sun 3 Apr 20:36/18   4/5   BRAZILIAN GRAND PRIX Austrian Gethard Berger set a new lap record in the Ferrari as he set off in pursuit of race leader Alain Prost. Berger clocked 1 min 32.9 secs, breaking the record of 1:33.546 set bz Nelson Piques in 1986. The race had been in danger of becoming a procession with a third distance to go when Berger started putting the pressure on the McLaren driver. Berger explained: "I was pushing every lap but, 10 laps from the end, I thought Alain had a problem and I tried very hard to catch him - eventually I realised it was not possible."

He said: "I was lucky and I know the track well. My team have built a great car - it is fantastic that it is competitive so quickly." Prost predicted a great season ahead for the McLarens, with more engine improvements still to bj made. He also tipped a turbo-powered car for ovjtall victory in the World Championship. "But I think there are some circuits where the aspirated cars will be more competitive than the turbos," he added.
