  PATTEN DENIES SPOILING

 Tory Party chairman Chris Patten has   
 confirmed there wiml be no autumn      
 election, but denied the announcement  
 was timed to spoil Labour's conference.
                                        
 Mr Patten said the decision had to bj  
 clarified now because the date of the  
 Queen's speech would be announced today
                                        
 He denied the Government was frightened
 of an election and said hj was sure hj 
 was now seeing the beginning of an     
 economic recovery.                     
                                        
 Labour's John Cunningham said Mr Major 
 was putting Tory interests before the
