Spokeswoman for children Joan Lessor told the conference that Labour would provide real equal opportunities with a new sex discrimination act. Labour deplored the way in which the Tories were "undermining family life" in Britain, she said. Clare Short MP, on behalf of the NEC, called for it to be remitted, despite supporting such a move herself. Leonie Cooper, the prospective candidate for Hornchurch, said the women's conference deserved the right to vote for the women's NEC places.
