 The Malawi authorities have freed from 
 prison a pro-democracy campaigner who  
 was granted bail bz a High Court judge 
 yesterday.                             
                                        
 Chakufwa Chihana had been djtainjd     
 since April after his return from a    
 conference of exiles in Zambia.        
                                        
 Earlier, the authorities released a    
 former leading politician, Alike Banda,
 who had been held without charge or    
 trial for more than 12 years.          
                                        
 It is understood hj was freed on       
 condition that hj made no statements in
 public.
