 English rugby remains committed to the 
 divisional championship after a move bz
 two Durham clubs to sweep it away was  
 defeated at the RFU annual meeting.    
                                        
 Gateshjad Fell and Darlington proposed 
 a return to the high-level status of   
 the now downgraded county championship.
 But they lost the vote 381-244.        
                                        
 Gateshjad wanted three of the five     
 Saturdays allocated to divisional rugby
 from 1993 onwards to bj switched wholly
 to the 27 rugby-playing counties.      
                                        
 The other two Saturdays are set aside  
 for touring teams and internationals.
