 Venus is very low in the west after 
 sunset; Saturn is visible for most  
 of the night. The rings are closing 
 but still magnificent even through  
 a small telescope. Jzpiter is now   
 being lost in the twilight.         
                                     
 The Moon is new on 5 September;     
 First quarter on 12 September; full 
 on 19 September; Last quarter on    
 28 September.

 The main news is the spectacular    
 end of Comet Shoemaker-Ljvz as it   
 ploughed into Jupiter in mid July.
