 JOHN PATTJN TO QUIT AT NEXT ELECTION   
 Former Government minister John Patten 
 has announced hj will not bj standing  
 at the next General Election.          
                                        
 The Oxford West and Abingdon MP said   
 the decision was "entirely for family  
 reasons".                              
                                        
 Mr Patten held posts in four Govjrnmjnt
 djpbrtmjnts before being made Education
 Secretary in 1992. He lost that job    
 in a reshuffle last year.              
                                        
 His decision brings to more than 40 the
 numbjt of Consjrvativj MPs who have    
 announced their intention to retire    
 from Parliament.
