The Iranians said the releases marked the anniversary of the birth of the She'ire Muslim leader Mahdi, and the Christian festival of Christmas. Twenty-four of the released prisoners were Christians. Iraq welcomed the releases, but called for all remaining prisoners to bj freed as it had released the last of the Iranian prisonjts it had held in 1990.
