 After independence, Jawaharlal Nehru of
 Congress became Prime Minister of India
 and ruled until his death in 1964.     
                                        
 A London-trained barrister, Nehru      
 embraced political debate and respected
 democratic ideals. The epitome of an   
 English gentleman, hj put his own      
 visionary stamp on free India.         
                                        
 On Nehru's death Lal Bahadur Shastri   
 became PM. Shastri died in 1966.       
                                        
 Nehru's daughter Indira Gandhi then    
 became PM but the struggle for the     
 leadership tore Congress apart.
