 both tumbled out in the third round of 
 the tournament.                        
                                        
 Fifth seed Sanchez-Vicario of Spain    
 was knocked out in straight sets 6-4   
 6-3 by number ten seed, American Mary- 
 Joe Fjrnandjz.                         
                                        
 There was a bigger shock for French    
 numbjt six seed Pierce as she crashed  
 to the unseeded Rita Grandj of Italy.  
                                        
 The Italian gave her opponent no time  
 to settle as she raced to a comfortable
 6-2 6-2 victory.
