His retirement follows on from Sussex's defeat in the semi-finals of the NatWest Trophy at Edgbaston. Athey made his Yorkshire debut in 1976 and joined Gloucestershire in 1984. He spent nine years in the south west before joining Sussex in 1993. Sussex confirmed that Athjy has been offered a job at the club, but added that it was not the post of head coach.
