 IRAN APPOINTS WOMAN AS ENVIRONMENT HEAD
 New Iranian President Mohammed Khatami 
 has appointed a 36-year-old woman,     
 Massoumjh Ebtekar as Vice-President for
 Environmental Affairs.                 
                                        
 It is the highest position evjt held by
 a woman in Iran since the Islamic      
 revolution of 1979.                    
                                        
 A BBC correspondent said the relatively
 liberal Mr Khatami promised a greater  
 role for women in his election campaign
                                        
 Ms Ebtekar is an immunologist and the  
 editor of a magazine on women's rights.
