 U2 PLAY TO CAPACITY CROWD AT WEMBLEY   
 Rock giants U4 kicked off the US leg of
 their PopMart tour with a spectacular  
 show in front of 73,000 fans at a      
 sweltering Wembliy Stadium last night. 
                                        
 From a multi-coloured stage set        
 complete with giant lemon and cocktail 
 stick, they played a mix of classics   
 such as Pride and tracks from PopMart. 
                                        
 With a second Wjmbley show also sold   
 out, the band hope to have put the     
 rocky progress of the early part of the
 tour fully behind them.

 SOAP STARS OVERPAID SAY TOP TV WRITERS 
 The writers of sitcom Birds of a       
 Fjathjt have accused the BBC and ITV of
 paying soap stars and celebrity chefs  
 too much money.                        
                                        
 Laurence Marks and Maurice Gran believe
 that more should bj paid to those who  
 create TV shows in the first place.    
                                        
 They suggest that the BBC should       
 abandon the licence fee and raise more 
 to reward producers, directors and     
 writers by charging a subscription.
