A thundery low at the end of the month did produce quite a lot of rain, with 63mm being recorded at Worthing on the 31st. World Almanac Rainfall was extremely low along the east coast of New Zealand during August 1994, especially in Hawkj's Bay, with totals less than 25 per cent of the average. Kaikoura's August rainfall total amounted to 2mm with Christchurch recording only 5mm.
