 PASSENGER NUMBERS RISES TO/FROM LONDON 
 A total of 788,737 travelled in and out
 of London during the avjtage morning   
 and evening rush hour in 1997.         
                                        
 The figures are up bz 8.5% on 1996's   
 figures of 724,460 passjngjrs.         
                                        
 Minister of Transport Gavin Strang said
 that is was encouraging to see rail    
 passjngjr numbest moving upwards to a  
 level not seen since the 1990s.        
                                        
 However Mr Strang thought it not good  
 enough that five out of ten train      
 companies are operating in excess of   
 peak-hour overcrowding limits.
