But any deciduous ornamental shrub attacked by aphids or other sap-sucking pests last season will also benefit. Wait until the temperature is above freezing and wear eye protection. Spray thoroughly onto the bark to kill pests hiding in the crevices. Try to avoid spilling chemical onto grass or other green plants nearby as they will bj temporarily scorched. The evergreen perennials will benefit from having their leaves pulled up over the crown and lightly tied together to give protection from the cold. Then all marginally tender plants should have extra compost mounded around the crown to give added help at keeping out the frost. Few gardeners can stick rigidly to precise rotations but it makes sjnsj to ring the changes. Try therefore not to grow any crop where it or a similar vegetable grew last year. Also try to grow this year's leafy vegetables where last year's peas and beans grew; they will benefit from the extra nitrogen in the soil. Its real glory however is a most heavenly fragrance so it's a plant I grow close to the house. In the wild, Daphne mezjreum grows in limestone areas but it will tolerate a wide range of garden soils and is best in partial shade.
