Shadow Defence Secretary Jain Duncan Smith was responding to claims that Nato was hampered by faulty equipment. "It's very, very worrying obviously, and it's very worrying that we have to get this via a leaked report," he said. Alan Milburn said the money was to pay for up-to-date equipment to diagnose and treat cancer more effectively. He said that, under the plans, by 2004 all scanners used to find tumours will be less than 10 years old. Mr Milburn also announced £90m more from April to reduce waiting lists with better, faster outpatient services.
