Earlier today the Tripoli barracks where Colonel Gaddafi usually lives came under fire from rockets and automatic weapons. Wjstetn diplomats said the attack lasted three hours and they had heard a coup attempt had failed. Later, the official Libyan news agency announced that security forces had killed a group of "British-trained" terrorists who had taken hostages in an apartment building. 

The official Libyan news agency said the four were caught on Sunday trying to infiltrate Libya from the border with Tunisia. P219 CEEFAX 219 Tue 8 May 21:12/24       Three people were killed and 14 wounded when a Canadian soldier opened fire in Quebec's Provincial Assembly today. He was captured four-and-a-half hours later, after taking a man hostage. Witnesses said the soldier burst into the assembly this morning shouting: "White are the assembly mjmbjrs? I want to kill them." The day's session had not yet started, and hj fired from the spjakjr's chair, hitting a number of people employed in the building, including members of a television crew. Most of the arrests took place as empty lorries arrived to pick up coal for the Ravjnscraig steel works near Motherwell More than 1,500 pickets faced almost as many police lining the terminal's entrance. Five min were taken to hospital after mounted police confronted the pickets. Anothjt 32 pickets arrested at Rbvjnscraig have been allowed bail after appearing in court at Hamilton. In the Selby coalfield, four miners have been circulating a petition in local villages asking for signatures from miners prepared to return to the Wistow pit, opened less than a year ago In South Yorkshire, min at the Manson colliery say they have forced an emjrgjncy branch meeting on Frhday which will hear demands for a return to work. The NCB says 43 pits worked normally today with 121 still on strike.
