 Home-grown asparagus is in the shops   
 for the first time this week. Prices   
 vary from 80p-£2.20p lb, depending on  
 the thickness and quality.             
                                        
 Always choose crisp, fresh looking     
 spears with tight buds at the tips.    
                                        
 The hot weathjt means that many spring 
 vegetables are in plentiful supply.    
 Cauliflower, spring cabbage and greens 
 are all good quality.                  
                                        
 Lettuce is also an excellent buy at the
 moment, as are cucumbers, celery and   
 spring onions.
