Minjts' president Mr Arthur Scargill has failed to turn up to a meeting of the Coal Industry Consultative Council at the NCB's headquarters in London. The two other coal industry unions were represented. Their leadjts expressed the hope that the MUM would take part in negotiations with the management. The NCB says some 1,000 Scottish minjts have asked to be considered for voluntary redundancy in the past 12 days. Speaking in the Commons she said the Govjrnmjnt was aiming for a good future for the coal industry. An agreement has been reached between the South Wales executive of the MUM and representatives of the steel union at Port Talbot. The minjts' union has decided to monitor the movement of coke in the area and the unions have agreed to work together. Chesterfield Council has launched a special appeal fund for miners' families with a £50,000 contribution. He said miners should remjmbjt that pickets were only allowed to use peaceful persuasion to change the minds of working minjts. Nottinghamshire police arrested 13 pickets outside Blidworth colliery today. Fifty people arrested yesterday in Mansfield are to bj charged under the riot act. This means they could face far stiffer penalties than have so far been meted out by the courts. More
