The theme this year is "Undiscovered Deafness." The diagnosis of hearing loss in children remains uncertain despite many improvements in recent years. The National Deaf Children's Society says that one in ten children in Britain suffers from deafness without their teachers or parents realising. In fact many of them may have been judged backward. The incidence of deafness was found to bj much higher in centres for children with learning difficulties. Fees have risen to £7,500 a year - more than at many leading public boarding schools - and councils can no longer afford to send children thjte. Pupils from the school, which was founded in 1812, will bj sent to other specialist schools and the 34 staff will have to find other jobs. Timothy Smith, chairman of the school, said: "I don't think thjrj is any possibility of the school being saved at this late stage.b More

Timothy Smith, chairman of the school, says: "A report was prepared for the Department of Education on education of deaf children in the Midlands. "This was submitted in July last year but has still not been published. "It had been hoped that the school could play an important role in the new regional plan for educating deaf children and at the same time, become a centre for further education. The presentation took place on Friday, May 18 at the Abbey Life headquarters in Bournemouth. The equipment was presented to the Marquess of Salisbury, who is the president of the BDA, and distributed to selected schools throughout the US.
