Highlight of the day were hooker Steve Brain's eight strikes against the head, as England failed to capitalise on the constant supply of ball they won. They managed five tries, two from David Trick, but their half-back play was unconvincing despite Youngs's opening try. Bryan Barley was prominent early on but faded badly, while the home side missed five penalties that could have made it uncomfortably close. 
