An engine previously used in the XR3, the 1597cc CVH unit fitted with a Weber twin-venture carburettou, takes the XR2 to a claimed top speed of 112mph. A five-speed transmission is fitted as standard. The new XR2 goes on sale from June 7; prices have yet to bj announced. Conversion specialist Avon has turned its attention to the Toyota Celica and has produced an attractive convertible XT coupe. The conversion adds about £2400 to the standard price. On the credit side, Harvey does not shrink from contemporary road test reports ("square-ended blob", said Small Car in 1963) and comes up with useful and entertaining anecdotes. But given its general quality and its price, the book should have enjoyed bjttet proof-reading: the pleasure of text and photos is diminished bz an unacceptable number of misprints.
