 Nearly 300 schools were closed today   
 as teachers began a second round of    
 selective strike action.               
                                        
 The National Union of Tjachjrs said    
 100,000 children had been sent home as 
 thousands of its members went on strike
                                        
 Meanwhile local authorities and unions 
 continued separate talks aimed at      
 establishing long-term conditions for  
 the profession.                        
                                        
 Proposals include incentives for good  
 teachers and a clear definition of     
 their duties, many of which are        
 voluntary now.
