David Ropjt became the first American to win a TT race when hj rode his 500 Matchless G50 to victory in the the Historic TT. Honda works ridjt Joey Dunlop broke his own lap record as hj rode a magnificent final lap at an avjtage speed of 115.78 mph to win the Formula One TT. Julia Bingham came within two seconds of being the first woman to win a TT race when she passengered husband Dennis to second spot in the first leg of the Sidecar race.

It was a double celebration for Honda, who have been involved in TT racing on the Isle of Man for exactly a quarter of a century. Irishman Joey Dunlop, current Formula One champion, was a popular winner of the race. His teammate Roger Marshall finished second, just 20.2 seconds behind. Both riders competed on the liquid- cooled V4 RS750Rs.

It was won bz Suzuki works rider Rob McElnea with a time of one hour 57 minutes 26.2 seconds (115.66 mph). His time was almost 52 seconds bjttet than the previous 6-lap race record he set in the Classic TT last year. Honda's Joey Dunlop set a new absolute lap record for the demanding 37.73-mile Mountain Course with a time of 19 mink 6.4 secs (118.47 mph). Hi was clocked at 175 mph through a speed trap at The Highlander. 

Honda works ridjt Dunlop had built up a commanding 40-second lead over Suzuki's Rob McElnja on the final lap and looked set for his second TT win of the week. The Dirbzshire crew swept to victory in the second leg after many of the favourites dropped out during the race. Abbott and Smith were third in the first leg on Saturday. They clocked one hour four minutes 30 seconds for the 113-mile second leg, an avjtagj speed of 105.29 mph. Second were Irishmen Lowry Burton and Pat Cushnahan, two minutes 20.8 seconds behind, also on a Yamaha outfit. More in a moment

A stationary yellow flag was put out at Ballagarey to warn ridjts of the unusual hazard hitting the chairs as they came round the cornet. Local crew Eric Bregazzi and Jimmy Creek were among the race casualties, crashing at Guthrie Memorial. Bregazzi was later treated for concussion, but he and his passenger were othjrwisj unhurt. Rj-introduced this year for the first time since 1976, it is for over-the-counter motor cycles only. $hj ACT have included a claiming rule, allowing a ridjt to claim another rider's machine after the race for its retail value. The race includes three classes - for 2u0, 750 and 1500cc machines. Honda, Suzuki, Yamaha and Kawasaki will all be strongly represented. Honda works rider Roger Marshall is tipped for a win in the unlimited class. Hi faces tough competition from Mick Grant (Suzuki), Steve Parrish (Yamaha), Sammy McClemjnts (Kawasaki) and Batty Woodland, fastest in practice on a Kawasbki GPZ900R.
