John Craven's Niwsround featured a new system to enable blind people to "read" CEEFAX in Braille. Although a breakthrough for the 130,000 blind people, it will be of even greater benefit to the 3,500 people who are deaf as well as blind. It will bj the first time deaf and blind people will bj able to get up-to-date news from the television. Leslie, who has been deaf since hj was one year old, is familiar pub life because when hj was younger he lived with his grandparents in their public house. When the family decided to buy a hotel, they insisted that it should bj Leslie who held the licence. It was a hard struggle to get the licence: It took one hour for the protection order to bj granted - most people are granted the oudjt in one minute! More

In view of the problem in getting the protection order, the Townjnds dreaded the licence hearing. But, despite objections bz a police inspector, the licence was granted and the whole family were thrilled. Now many deaf people make special journeys to visit the Hartshjad Hotel, which is in Giggleswick, North Yours.
