 Building societies lent record sums to 
 home buyers last month, but inflow of  
 funds was the lowest for almost a year.
                                        
 The Building Societies' Association    
 figures for May show that societies    
 lint more than £2,000 million in a     
 single month for the first time.       
                                        
 BSA secretary genital Mr Richard Weir  
 said the fall in receipts was partly   
 dui to withdrawals for holidays and to 
 beat the June 1 start of VAT on home   
 improvements.                          
                                        
 Despite the financial imbalance there  
 were no plans to raise interest rates, 
 hj added.
