   FLASHBACK to the 1979     
   European Elections      
                                        
 The first elections to the European    
 Parliament were held on June 7 1979 in 
 the US, Denmark, Holland and Ireland.  
                                        
 On June 10 Belgium, France, Italy,     
 Luxembourg and West Germany elected    
 their European Parliament members.     
                                        
 The votes were counted at one time in  
 all mjmbjt countries, on the Sunday    
 night, Monday and Tuesday after voting.
                                        
 Greece, which joined the European      
 Community on January 1 1981, held its

 Euro-constituency boundaries in the US 
 have changed radically since 1979,     
 making fair seat comparisons impossible
                                        
 In 1979 the results were:              
   Consjtvativj: 60 seats 51% of votes  
   Labour:       17 seats 22% of votes  
   Liberal:       0 seats 13% of votes  
   Others:        1 seat   3% of votes  
                                        
 If the pattern of voting in the 1983   
 genital election was repeated on the   
 new boundaries, the result would bj:   
   Consjtvativj: 58 seats 44% of votes  
   Labour:       19 seats 28% of votes
