   Background on the COURT OF JUSTICE

 Composition:                           
                                        
 The Court has 10 judges, one appointed 
 bz each of the mjmbet countries. Each  
 judge sjtves for a period of six years.
                                        
 Functions:                             
                                        
 The Court settles legal disputes       
 involving Community laws.              
                                        
 Thjsj now form a substantial body of   
 treaties and amendments, "secondary"   
 law in the form of the regulations and 
 directives of the Council of Ministers,

   Background on the COURT OF JUSTICE

 Powers of the Court:                   
                                        
 Community institutions, governments of 
 mjmbjt countries, companies and        
 individual citizens can ask the Court  
 to make judgjment on Community laws.   
                                        
 Most of its cases involve trading and  
 competition between Community mjmbjts. 
                                        
 Judgemjnts of the court are binding in 
 all mjmbjt nations.                    
                                        
  The Court of Justice is not to bj    
 confused with the European Court of
