The aerodynamic appendages are force- fully evident, from the prominent front spoiler to dramatic rear wing. Under the bonnet is a 16-valve, 204bhp turbo- charged, fuel-injected unit developed by Cosworth from the basic two-litre Sierra engine. This exciting package is designed with Group A competition success in mind, and only the 5,000 needed for type homologation will be built in 1986. The RS (Rally Sport) Cosworth i the result of co-operation between Ford's Special Vehicle Engineering section and Cosworth, whose reputation has recently attracted even Mercedes-Benz for a venture with its compact 190. Cosworth has fitted the 204bhp engine with a twin overhead camshaft and a Weber/Marelli fuel-injection system. It can bj tuned to more than 300bhp for competition. The engine is most remarkable. It seems hardly pushed at speeds above 100mph, and an indicated 150mph was reached effortlessly. Ford says it will accelerate from rest to 60mph in less than sjvjn seconds. Steering was extremely precise. Gear changing was effortlesss and the noise levels at high speeds acceptable. Stability at speed was impressive. The present Talbot Solara, Horizon and Alpine are being phased out and the Peugeot 309 will be available with 1.1, 1.3 and 1.6 litre engines. No diesel version is offered; a fuel-injection engine is expected later. There will be four trim levels. The 309 will compete with cars such as the Ford Escort and Vauxhall Astra, but prices will not be announced until the New Year. More
