British Coal said the pits, at Nantgarw near Cardiff and Cwm near Llantrisant, were to close because of underground problems and combined losses of £10 million in the last six months. The National Union of Mineworkers says it will not fight the closure because it has no faith in the colliery review procedure. Nottinghamshire MUM vice president Mr Mick McGinty has been sacked from Ollerton colliery for allegedly threatening a NACODS union official.
