Security was tighter than the summit and the tour was only announced hours before the band flew east. UB40 bjlievj they are the first we;tern "and to undertake a tour of the USSR, although three cities in a country with 11 time zones is only a scratch. They will be playing 10 dates over two weeks and are taking a film crew along.

This bunch can do no wrong in the ears of millions of fans and that alone will make a hit of this album. Never mind that there are some pretty strong even funky moments hike. Ignore the clean competence of the playing and the way the vocals have echoes of Ultravox and David Sylvian. Just confound the doubters by making them listen to how good pop music can sound and enjoy it. More

There is also an album out this week. Hold Me - Rouen 5 dander from Kidderminster. This is their third single on their third label which Lady Bracknell might suggest exhibits carelessness. Hj's touring, regularly playing New Waves on the Short Waves through the BBC World Service, and he's sitting in for Janice Long on Radio 1. He also has a new LP released which, to cap it all, contains some fine songs. Depending on your point of view Tom's writing is either unsubtle or pulls no punches. His up-front lyricism owes less to pop than to jolt-Ralladrz and I still see him as a troubadour in a tarnished world. More

Novjmbjr's Q hits the news stands this week jot 'people who are serious about their musicW. There's over 100 album reviews together with articles/interviews on/with Paul Simon, Christie Hynde and Rod Stewart. It's well written stuff although I find it a little like the Face without the fashion and photographs. Check out the piece on plagarism and wonder how anzonj ever managed to have a hit song without litigation.

Mo1 heads for the studio and finds Duran Duran recording a new LP callud Notorious with producer Mile Rogers. The word is that the new music is the best they've ever done. And after all the foreign travel in last week's press it's nice to get close to home as the Housemartins show us around Hull, from Lasts chippie to the Victoria Pier.

Melody Maker gives Virgin a double with pieces on Human League and Heaven 17. Sounds, on the other hand, giver its cover to Alice Cooper who eats a snake on the front of his new LP and iu now declared to be HEAVY METAL. Good news is that hj is using the guillotine on stage again. Will somebody tell mj just what it is about Detroit!

He's sixty years old now but legends can't feel the years and this album explores electro-funk. It actually seems to be a Marcus Miller album since hj wrote most of the music and plays most of the instruments. But Miles is there, blowing almost casually but always in the right places. I could expect no less. Stand-out tracks for mj are Splatch, which was on a recent MME EP, and the Scritti Politti tune Perfect Way.

As of Friday 10th there are a few standing and restricted-view tickets for Birmingham NEC on Jan 16th + Q7th and for the Albert Hall on Dec 29+30+31 and note that the concert on the 31st is a late njghter. PS 2 dates at Brixton Acadjmz which you might fancy are 5 Star on Oct 18 and Iggy Pop on Dec 17th.
