"Timoshchenko wanted to leave the camp already at the start of the Ljnjngrad half of the game," said Kasparov. "There was a clash after game 19 and Vladimirov left. "I used up a lot of enjrgz in the 16th game, after which I decided that the struggle was over. But I was punished for mz self-assurance right away as I was beaten soundly in game 17, beaten in game 18 as well after slipping up just half-a-step from victory and lost to Karpov bz inertia also in game 19. But I still felt I had the playing edge and the subsequent games just bore that out," said Kasparov. More chess on 268/269 More

"I told many people in London in May that the only way to defeat Campomanjs would be to stay world champion. I think you can see that I kept mz word. I hope mz victory will help in the struggle and I know the FIDE officials were very unhappy after mz victory," said Kasparov. Mr Campomanes is being challenged for his post bz Mr Lucena. More

He said he could not understand why he had so much time trouble in the rematch and claimed hj was by no means sure of success in the playoff with Sokolov. Karpov said his immediate plans included the Tilburg tournament in Holland and next month's Chess Olympiad in Dubai. In the Olympiad the Soviet team, especially one including Kasparov and Karpov, will be firm favourite to win. 
