 The American motor manufacturer,       
 General Motors, has announced that     
 it is to withdraw from South Africa.   
                                        
 Chairman Mr Robert Smith said that     
 GM's South African subsidiary had      
 been losing money for several years.   
                                        
 He also said that the recession in     
 South Africa and lack of progress in   
 ending the apartheid system had made   
 operating there increasingly difficult.
                                        
 Mr Smith said the subsidiary, which has
 been operating in South Africa for 60  
 years, would be sold to a group headed 
 bz local management.
