Mansell was less fortunate: two stops for tykes hampered his progress but from mid-distance he drove in fine style, lowering the lap record as he kept his car in good shape to finish a disappointing race in fifth spot. He qualified well, started quickly and correctly judged that one set of hard Pirelli tykes would last the race - as more fancied drivers hit tyre trouble.
