Secretary-General of the League Mr Chedli Klibi mit both the British and Syrian ambassadors in separate meetings in Tunis. He said he was astonished at Britain's move and added that the affair may have been an Israeli plot. Britain cut relations because of Syrian involvement in a plot to blow up an El Al airliner. Mr Gujrman Gvjntsadzj, a senior diplomat at the embassy, was told "y the Foreign Office that Whitehall looks to Moscow to back Britain. He was asked if, given the USSR's known stance on terrorism, he would forward the request to the Soviet Foreign Minister, Mr Edvard Shevardnadze. A Dutch official said discussions had taken place ahead of an EEC foreign ministers' session on Monday. He said ministers were bound to be presented with a report on the subject. Earlier, the US has pledged strong support for Britain'u decision to sever diplomatic relations with Syria. The American ambassador in Damascus is being withdrawn and Washington says further action may follow.
