 Reports from Rsi Lanka say that troops 
 shot dead at least eight civilians in a
 military operation during the week.    
                                        
 The authorities had made no mention of 
 civilian casualties after the operation
 near the north-western town of Mannar  
 on Wjdnjsdaz.                          
                                        
 But a 19-year-old girl, reportedly     
 wounded in the incident, said soldiers 
 had shot dead her father, mother, three
 sisters and brother.                   
                                        
 She said that she had also seen the    
 bodies of another man and a woman.     
 Other reports say that as many as 13   
 civilians died.
