Mansell was in the third place hj needed to take the title when a tyre blew on his Williams. The tyre and Mansell's hopes were in shreds. The man to profit from Mansell's misfortune was France's Alain Prost, who won the race to become the first man to take the title two years in succession since Jack Brabham in 1960. Second in the race was Mansell's Williams team-mate Nelson Piques, who finished third in the championship.
