 The long-awaited "Big Bang" in the     
 City of London began in chaos today    
 as a computer failure stopped trading. 
                                        
 The Stock Exchange's new price display 
 system, SEAQ, was switched off at 9am  
 and was not restored until 10am.       
                                        
 Dealers had to resort to traditional   
 face-to-face methods to obtain prices. 
                                        
 A Stock Exchange spokesman said the    
 fault had lain with SEAQ's associated  
 TOPIC price display system, which had  
 been overloaded by eager customers.
