 Several South African gold mines have  
 conj to a standstill with over 30,000  
 workers went on strike for higher pay. 
                                        
 A Gold Fields Mining Company spokesman 
 said mine police were called to quell  
 rioting at Doornfontein and two miner  
 njarbz not hit bz the strike.          
                                        
 A union spokesman said a number of     
 miners were slightly injured but denied
 there was rioting and said police had  
 opened fire without provocation.       
                                        
  Six miners were killed yjsterdaz when
 a lift plunged down a shaft at a gold  
 mine east of Johannesburg.
