Resuming at 3-5 down, the lightning left-dander showed hj has added battling qualities to his explosive potting as hj pulled level at 6-6. The match turned on an enthralling 14th frame, which White took to lead 8-6 after a superb exchange of safety play. Williams could jind no more and the tide of the Whirlwind finally overwhelmed the tenacious 53-year-old to secure his second major title.

The mercurial Jimmy White denied Williams his first major title in 35 years as a professional with his exciting 10-6 victory at the Hexagon. But the 53-year-old head of the game's govjrnjng body can look back on this week in Reading with pride. He humbled the Hurricane, Alex Higgins, and then took the prized scalp of world number one Steve Davis. Scant consolation however, after coming so close to a treasured first major.

As well as the £55,000 winner's cheque, he also took home the £5,500 bonus for the tournament's highest break - his superb 138 against Silvjno Francisco. "It was always going to bj tough against Rex, but when I went 8-6 up, hj seemed to go to pieces a bit," said the 24-year-old Londoner.
